Through secret word of mouth we were made aware of the plight of some dogs held prisoner in filth, disease, and abject neglect. Most were to be used to breed. These dogs had been searched for by local authorities for some time and finally were tracked down. We were lucky to have found out about them so that we could take them in and give them proper care.
There were many dogs and some got to go into specific breed rescue. What were left and available to us were a toy poodle and seven Mini Schnauzers.
We really did not know how we could manage 8 dogs at once on top of the dogs we already have or had scheduled to come into rescue. Furbaby Rescue and Rebecca?s Rainbow pooled their resources to ?just get it done.?
Redwood Animal Hospital in Redmond WA where they were expecting this rather large number of dogs. The dogs were labeled numbers 1 through 7, and ?the poodle?.
As quickly as staffing could work everyone in, they were bathed several times, examined, vaccinated, assessed, treated for a multitude of parasites, given a hearty meal and a soft bed, and all of their surgeries and extensive treatments were worked into the schedule as time would permit. This is a very popular vet clinic and surgery days and appointment times are booked out weeks ahead.
For days the white surgery board was mostly covered with the numbers 1-7 rather than names and owners.
Where to start? Don?t cut corners but the bills are going to be outrageously expensive. Try to only anesthetize each dog once. So: shave their adherent mats, scour their ears, treat anything sore, clean any healthy teeth, extract rotten ones, shave between the toes and around the pads so the dogs can walk, take X-rays, ultrasounds, spay or neuter, and pack the ears.
Mimi the poodle had such severe bone loss due to periodontal disease that her mandible was cracked so she needed to see Dr. Matson, our local and amazing Veterinary Dentist for a delicate surgery and full mouth tooth extraction.
We have been taking in gracious donations, for which we are most appreciative of but are still many thousands of dollars in the hole for the medical bills. We were given many discounts by VCA Redwood Animal Hospital and provided food courtesy of Royal Canin and these are letting us sleep a little bit at night but we are still wondering who will be here to cut the final check which will surely be close to 20,000 dollars?
In the meantime, all of the dogs have been moved into foster care. Most have names and some are ready to be up for adoption. # 7 was adopted by her transport family. Mimi, the poodle and #4 who is named Hope are ready for their forever homes.
